Saturday after lunch we will visit Carnton, a historic plantation house built in Franklin TN by Randal McGavock in 1826. In 1864 Carnton was the site of one of the bloodiest battles of the Civil War, The Battle of Franklin. The house was used as a field hospital for tending the wounded and dying after the Battle of Franklin. The McGavock’s donated 2 acres of land that became the McGavock Confederate Cemetery, a place for quiet reflection. The novel by Robert Hicks is based on the true story of Carrie McGavock and Carnton.
