2021 Virtual Spring Convention

In the summer of 2020, a decision had to be made whether to continue with the virtual Zoom format originally used for our fall forum, or take a chance that most ADS members would be vaccinated for COVID-19 by April, 2021, when the original Gettysburg convention was planned. It would have been quite a gamble to risk several thousand dollars in hotel guarantee fees on a rapid vaccine development and deployment, and so it was decided to continue with the Zoom format for Spring 2021 in lieu of the traditional in-person convention.

Zoom is a web-based video conferencing tool with a local, desktop client and a mobile app that allows users to meet online, with or without video. Convention registrants are sent a meeting access code, including password, they will use to attend our meetings and events through a computer, phone or tablet connection.  Zoom has Video Tutorials ( on its website if you want to check your equipment ahead of time. All event times are stated in Eastern Standard Time (EST) and you are strongly encouraged to “join” a presentation 10 minutes prior to its start time.

The registrar sends 2 emails for every event via Mail Chimp. A reminder email will be sent two-days prior to the event and another email with the Zoom meeting credentials 2 hours in advance of the event. This is a lot of emails to receive, and it is imperative the convention attendee receives them in their inbox, and not their spam folder! If you would like to check your receipt of ADS convention emails ahead of time, just drop an email to Suzy Wert, and she will send a test email out to you!

The 2021 ADS Virtual National Convention, Reach for the Stars, has a decidedly global flavor with featured speakers Nial Watson from Northern Ireland, Lawrence Trevanion from Australia, Theo Sanders from Germany, and David Adams plus Graeme and Faith Miller from New Zealand.

“Butterflies Around in the World”, given by Andrea Schepmann of Ohio, continues our global theme, crowned with our own Dianne Bowditch speaking on “Daffodils and Perfume”. Kathleen Simpson shows us how to do “Hot Water Treatment for Daffodils using Sous Vide Unit”, Sara Van Beck and Historic daffodil friends will have a lively discussion at  "Let's Talk Historics! Daffodil Sleuthing: Show and Tell Time", Jason Delaney will talk about "PHS and the Daffodils of the Show Me State", and Becky Fox Matthews is hosting a lively Judge’s Refresher, “Daffodil Jeopardy Game”.

Registration also allows access to Janet Hickman’s curated Live Bulb Auctions and the special Photography Show recap event, revealing the top-winning photos.

Reach for the Stars is brought to you by the ADS Midwest Region, ADS President, Fredrica Lawlor, Convention Chair.
