Marathon Daffodils mission is one of a giving nature. Our Non Profit distributes thousands of daffodils from the Boston Marathon’s start in Hopkinton to the finish line on Boylston Street in Boston and dozens of sites within the city. We raise money solely to source locally grown daffodils. With the help of hundreds of dedicated volunteers we are able to distribute these glorious yellow daffodils as reminders of the strength of all Bostonians after the tragic events in 2013. Our hope is to brighten and beautify the City with reminders throughout showcasing resiliency and rebirth through the giving of daffodils.
Marathon Daffodils, a Massachusetts registered Non-Profit 501(c)3 corporation, started as a tribute to Boston Strong by delivering thousands of daffodils throughout Boston and along the Boston Marathon route. Envisioned six years ago, by Boston resident and urban horticulturist Diane Valle, to “remember those who lost their lives, acknowledge those who suffered injuries, those who rushed to their aid, and to signify the resilience and strength of the entire Boston Strong community. The energy and spirit are all around us on Marathon Monday, so come watch the remarkable runners; see the beautiful, cheerful, yellow Marathon Daffodils; enjoy our great City of Boston and celebrate this Spring tradition.”
The creation of Marathon Daffodils was meant to inspire hope, fortify rebirth and spotlight the resilience of all Bostonians and Americans alike. This small beautification of our city has become a shining light to runners, visitors, businesses and other patrons during Marathon Monday.
On or about April 12 every year, 25,000 Dutch Master daffodil bulbs imported from Holland, planted the preceding October and stored in a massive cooler at Olson’s Greenhouses in Raynham, MA, end their winter-long hibernation. The pots of daffodils are loaded onto trucks, while teams of volunteers gather at dozens of stores, restaurants, business, green spaces and doorsteps along the marathon route to receive more than 5,000 pots of Marathon Daffodils to supplement the existing plantings of previous years’ work.
Any and all monies received through donations are solely used to purchase and grow daffodil bulbs. All corporate, organizational and distribution work is done completely by Volunteers. We are entirely funded through generous donations of all amounts.
Marathon Daffodils accepts bulb donations too. Please email Dianne Valle at firstname.lastname@example.org
